George Begg

February 13 – 16, 2020

A legend is coming home.

Invercargill has a thing with wheels – and New Zealand’s premier destination for petrolheads is set to add another jewel to its crown. Southlander George Begg has been dubbed motorsport’s equivalent to Enzo Ferrari, and a city-wide celebration of the legendary engineer is set to take centre stage in February 2020. A spectacular new George Begg exhibit will officially open at Classic Motorcycle Mecca on 13 February, while the first-ever George Begg Classic Speedfest will kick into action at Teretonga Park on 15 and 16 February 2020.

George Begg at Classic Motorcycle Mecca

A spectacular new exhibit dedicated to Begg is coming to Classic Motorcycle Mecca. Housed in a 1600m2, custom-built space the exhibit will feature vehicles built in the fabled ‘George’s Toyshop’, memorabilia from his motorcycling days, and more.

George Begg Classic Speedfest

Together Transport World and the Southland Sports Car Club will also bring the first-ever George Begg Classic Speedfest at Invercargill’s Teretonga Park on 15 and 16 February. The festival of retro racing will bring atmosphere in spades. Don’t forget your costume! Spectators and visitors alike – get into the spirit of Kiwi motorsport’s heyday and come along kitted out in costume matching the vintage of the vehicle you’re backing to win.

The vision: 2021 and beyond

We want the George Begg Classic Speedfest to be a must-see event for everybody. The experience will combine top-notch racing with a retro festival atmosphere. We’re talking plenty of action on and off the track – live music, vintage fashion, plenty of food and drink options to get you in a party mood, and a vibe that is completely unique to Southland. Long-term, we want the George Begg Classic Speedfest to be an event people just can’t miss. It’s going to be a petrolhead’s paradise, and we look forward to sharing it with you.
