City redevelopment comes to life

  • 5 June 2020

The shift into Level 2 saw the $165 million revitalisation of Invercargill’s CBD swing back into action.

More than 9000 square metres of an entire city block – reimagined as the home of a modern multi-faceted centre featuring retail, food and beverage offerings, office space, apartments and more – have already been demolished as the project progresses. Major focuses of the project now are the preparation work needed to demolish the former Government Life bu8ilding, as well as disconnecting the Southland Times façade (which will be retained) so the building behind it can be demolished.

Invercargill Central Limited (ICL), overseeing the project, has released its latest batch of updated interior renders and a spectacular fly-through video designed to give viewers a glimpse into what they can expect when the project is completed: you can check it out here.

The redevelopment aims to breathe life back into the inner-city and has been heralded as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to revitalise the heart of Invercargill.

In the meantime, ICL has implemented a range of projects designed to ensure foot traffic in the area remains consistent, and visitors are still able to access information about the project.

The Esk Street Food Village is now open between 9am – 2.30pm every Monday to Friday, as well as during some weekends. Meanwhile, a new Information Hub is set to open in the landmark former Bank of New South Wales building. This space will give the public the chance to pop in and find out more about the redevelopment. They will be able to ask questions, view the development plans, history of the site and discover more regarding any interesting archaeological findings. The hub will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am – 2pm.
