McDonald's Happy Meal toys
It’s our happiest exhibit yet!
Bill Richardson Transport World is now home to what is believed to be the largest display of retro McDonald’s Happy Meal toys in New Zealand.
To celebrate the opening of the McDonald's Happy Meal toys exhibit this July, we've created a special school holiday activity trail your little ones will love.
So, how did this colourful and quirky collection of vintage McDonald’s Happy Meal toys come to our museum here in Invercargill?
Well, it all started with a bit of passion: Bill Richardson’s passion was for vintage trucks; for Auckland woman Marian Burns’ mum Norma and stepfather Charles, it was retro Happy Meal toys.
Since 1979, the pair collected an incredible array of them – more than 1,500 in fact. Norma’s dementia diagnosis saw her move into a care facility in 2020; to help fund her care, it was time for her toy collection to move on too. That’s where we come in.
But wait – there’s more!
When we told McDonald’s New Zealand about the exhibit we were planning, they came on board too: and we instantly doubled the number of Happy Meal toys available for display. Included in the pieces we acquired from McDonald’s? Just the coolest car you’ll ever see – the Filet-o-Fish car is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face!
